Can A Black Woman be Zero Waste?

I fully admit to slacking on my blog for some time now due to the overwhelming amount of access to information about green beauty on brown skin popping up. I have stepped back to my laptop to say this week a boom of information blew up my world. I thought I was doing all the right things: buying healthy beauty products, eating all the right foods, and going to ethical grocery stores. Then I watched a video about a woman fitting two years worth of waste in a jar. If I wore a wig it would be snatched!

First, let me start by saying, I will never be fully zero waste because in our current society I don’t see that as being possible. I am, however, working actively now to become an eco-friendly and low impact participant in society. What is that? You may be wondering. I define this as someone doing all they can to reduce their harm to the environment while they are alive and present. Some may say these people are environmentally conscious.

What makes your blog different from all the others about going Low Impact and Zero Waste? To be blunt, I’m a black gay woman. When I first was looking for produces in the green beauty world, it was hard enough given the lack of options in skin tone. You add that the produces have to be in glass, metal, or compostable containers, oh hell! This is going to be tough, and I didn’t say the word hair. Brands designed for women who are looking for these types of products tend to only cater to a small range of skin tones, skin types, and hair types tending to fit the profile of the average white person with straight hair.

So then what is the point in trying? We are trying for our plant and the children not yet to come. We are going to encourage companies through the power of our purchase to invest their money in sustainable products that we can have access to long term without plastic.  Similarly, black women are doing this work to convince companies to create products with fewer chemicals and more natural ingredients for us and our hair.

So come on a ride with me as I get started on this journey as a Black Woman toward zero waste. Will I make it there? Hell no! But Hey I will make an IMPACT 🙂

I hope what I wrote was helpful and encouraging. Today I am having my first cup of tea. I hope you will join in the many more posts and cups to come. We can reduce little by little to help the planet a lot.

With Love,

YaniTee
